Estate agents have reported an increase in the number of Londoners are looking for properties outside of the city and houses with plenty of outdoor and indoor space. The COVID-19 pandemic appears to have accelerated many of the previously observed trends, as there were signs that people were growing tired of living in London even before the lockdown.

In August 2020, the London Assembly Housing Committee revealed that roughly half of Londoners want to leave the city. A Getamover study pursued this observation further and discovered that the national average is even higher. They discovered a plethora of statistics that extend beyond London and focus on the largest cities in the United Kingdom. According to their findings, two-thirds of UK citizens looking to relocate are looking for a new home outside of their previous city.

The Impact of Changing Workplaces

With the government recommending people to work from home as much as possible during the lockdown, estimates suggest that roughly half of the UK workforce has been working remotely over the last few months. Although remote working was meant to be a temporary strategy to minimize coronavirus transmission, it seems that both businesses and employees recognize that the advantages of working remotely make it a feasible and even desired long-term option.

With the majority of the population spending more time at home than ever before during the months of lockdown restrictions, many city dwellers will have wished for a larger house with a garden and access to more green spaces. As a result, it it seems that the coronavirus has prompted many people to reconsider their lifestyle choices and consider how they will live after the lockdown is lifted. Several people would have embraced staying in a comparatively small and pricey flat or house in London prior to COVID-19 simply for the ease of commuting to work. However, with the rise of remote working, it appears that people want more from their homes than just a base for commuting. Instead, they desire a property that will enhance the quality of life and enable them to live a healthy lifestyle, which is pushing them to investigate larger properties in the countryside outside of cities.

Things to Consider

You’ll need to start saving for a down payment on a home, keeping in mind that the more you can put down, the more competitive prices you’ll be able to get. It will be beneficial to do some research on property prices in the area where you want to buy so you can figure out how much you need to save and budget properly. Remember to account for stamp duty as well as any other costs, such as moving expenses, surveyor fees, and legal fees. Removal companies in the UK will help you sort these things out. Moving houses necessitates much thought and planning, especially if you are relocating to a different part of the country. Strong internet connection and lifestyle are additional elements to consider while looking for a new place to live.
